With the ever-growing interest in cannabidiol (CBD) as a natural form of treatment for different conditions, it is clear that CBD is here for the long term. CBD has been found to have health benefits including alleviating chronic pain in users, treating depression, anxiety and treating epilepsy. Scientific findings even suggest that CBD may help deal with the symptoms of menopause.
CBD is a type cannabinoid that occurs naturally in the hemp plant. Unlike its other popular counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD isn’t psychoactive and will not make you “high.” This
CBD and menopause
CBD can help to mitigate the symptoms of menopause that so often plagues the majority of middle-aged women. It interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the body. Now, the body is made up of a system called the endocannabinoid system. This system is also made up of a collection of receptors. These receptors are located in the brain, organs, and other body tissues. The receptors in the endocannabinoid system work to help maintain proper bodily functions like mood regulation, temperature regulation, sleep, memory, just to mention a few.
Researchers have also found that the receptors in the endocannabinoid system could positively interact with CBD to help treat several health conditions.
One condition in humans that has been shown to obstruct the proper functioning of the endocannabinoid system is menopause. There are several cannabinoid receptors spread across the reproductive system of females.
What menopause symptoms can CBD treat
There are no clear-cut
• Mood swings
This is one big issue for most women going through menopause. One minute, they’re all hale and hearty; the next minute they’re all down and depressed. A study in 2010 revealed how effectively CBD could work as an antidepressant medication effect positive changes in the mood of people so as to reduce the symptoms of depression.
• Sleep disorders
Lack of proper sleep could be very detrimental to the health of menopausal women and anyone for that matter. In menopausal women, one common complaint is the inability to have a good night’s rest on a regular basis. A case study conducted in 2016 on people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) revealed how CBD oil enhanced sleep by minimizing anxiety and sleep disturbances.
• Bone density loss
As women age, especially when they get to the menopausal stage, the rate at which new bone tissue is produced to replace the old slows down, causing a reduction in the density of the bone. In such instances, fractures or bruises become common occurrences. Research, however, has found that CBD can help reduce the rate of bone density loss by interacting positively with a cannabinoid receptor in the body.
Though CBD has been found to have awesome therapeutic benefits, the evidence there it can be used to treat menopause is not definitive, The potential is there of course but more research needs to be carried out for all of us to be sure about it.
